The Virginia High School Rodeo Association is one of 40 states, 5 Canadian Provinces and Australia that make up the National High School Rodeo Association. The VHSRA is a non-profit organization just for high school students from any high school or home-schooled in Virginia who desire to participate in the sport of Rodeo.

The mission of this organization along with the NHSRA is to promote a positive image of rodeos, preserve the Western heritage and maintain the highest regard for the livestock. Virginia High School Rodeo is not only a sport for the youth but a family that bonds together to see that we play a part in the development of our children's futures.

While rodeo is not recognized as a regular high school varsity sport, no other athletic activity in history was ever developed which so embodies the traditions and history of an entire way of life. The events in rodeo grew out of the actual day-to-day duties of the American cowboy, or were dreamed up to further test the courage, stamina and ability of these Westerners. The cowboy or cowgirl and the animals used in rodeo compete against themselves and the clock, as much as they compete against each other.

In summary, the VHSRA provides a unique opportunity for Virginia youth to participate in one of the most rewarding sports experiences available anywhere and, you don't have to be born in the saddle to be involved.

Our rodeo year runs from August 1 through July 31. Members compete on the state level all year for points in each event. Our state finals are held in June and each member competes for year end awards and scholarships and also the chance to represent Virginia at the National Finals High School Rodeo. At the conclusion of our state finals, the top four in each event are qualified to go to Nationals held in July and compete with over 1,500 other contestants at the World's Largest Rodeo for national titles, awards and scholarships. The 2008 National Finals will be held in Farmington, New Mexico.

Membership: Any high school student under the age of 20 enrolled in 9th, 10th, 11th , or 12th grade can join anytime during the year. Must maintain grades and conduct standards set forth.

Dues: $155.00 to be paid with application. Dues must be paid before call in for first rodeo.
Each member is required to turn in $250.00 for sponsorship before April 15. This is to help pay for the state finals. Each member is to turn in ads for each sponsorship to compile an Ad book to give out at state finals.
